Position data before a chart label

An ephemeris supplies calculated positions as a function of time. Chart software combines those data with reference frames, observer assumptions and classification rules. A nakshatra name is therefore a derived label, not a raw ephemeris measurement.

Swiss Ephemeris documents calculation options and flags; VedAstro's public source shows another layer of chart calculations. Inspecting an algorithm explains how an output is produced. It does not independently validate every interpretation built on that output.

Trace an example from input to label

A reproducible record follows this sequence:

  1. Input: local date, clock time and place, with uncertainty retained.
  2. Instant: historical time-zone conversion and the time scale expected by the calculation library.
  3. Position: body, observer convention and ephemeris version.
  4. Frame: tropical or sidereal, with exact ayanamsa option if sidereal.
  5. Classification: sign, nakshatra or house rules, with boundary handling.
  6. Presentation: rounding, translated labels and source context.

Do not reuse rounded presentation text as the numerical input for a later division. A display such as “13° Aries” loses the detail needed to check the 13°20′ nakshatra boundary.

For a worked example of the instant-conversion step, see historical daylight saving and birth times. A local clock reading can occur twice during a backward clock change.

Accuracy and uncertainty are different

A high-precision position calculation cannot recover an uncertain birth time. Conversely, a well-recorded birth instant can still be processed incorrectly if a time-zone rule or coordinate flag is wrong. Treat input quality and computation quality as separate checks.

For comparison, retain a small sample of full-precision coordinates and the complete settings instead of comparing only generated prose. If a result changes after a software update, that record helps distinguish a new algorithm from a new interpretation.

Continue with the birth-star notebook to inspect the classification layer. For apparent direction over time, see retrograde motion. No private birth details are needed for either educational example.
