Range and traditional context
Mrigashira occupies the equal sidereal sector from Taurus 23°20′ to before Gemini 6°40′. Mrigashira is traditionally associated with Soma and a deer-head symbol.
A reference to a star group or symbol is not the mathematical definition of this sector. In this guide, the sector is defined by longitude. The birth-star label uses the Moon; another body can occupy the same sector without making it your Moon-based birth nakshatra.
The four padas
Each pada spans 200 arcminutes, or 3°20′. Start points are included and end points are excluded.
| Pada | Starts at | Ends before |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Taurus 23°20′ | Taurus 26°40′ |
| 2 | Taurus 26°40′ | Gemini 0°00′ |
| 3 | Gemini 0°00′ | Gemini 3°20′ |
| 4 | Gemini 3°20′ | Gemini 6°40′ |
Mrigashira crosses from Taurus into Gemini. A Gemini position can still belong to its fourth pada. Treat the nakshatra as a continuous sector instead of restarting the calculation at each sign.
Worked Moon example
Take an invented sidereal Moon longitude of 64°, equivalent to Gemini 4°00′. Its offset from the start of Mrigashira is 640 arcminutes.
floor(640 ÷ 200) + 1 = 4
The example is Mrigashira, pada 4. It is not a current ephemeris position or a personal reading. Reproduce it in the birth-star calculation notebook, keeping the same zodiac and offset convention.
Using the symbolism carefully
The deer-head image can support a reflective question about searching: what information would help you decide, and when is further searching no longer useful? This is a chosen metaphor. It is not evidence that the birth star determines curiosity, relationships or professional suitability.
Naming practices sometimes associate syllables with the pada. Consult the naming guide for the method and language caveats. For a personal chart, verify your birth inputs before comparing a label; precise-looking output cannot repair uncertain birth time or an unstated ayanamsa.
