North versus South Indian birth charts: how to read the layouts

Read fixed-house and fixed-sign chart drawings using one example, without mistaking a different layout for a different calculation.

A drawing is not a new sky position

In the common North Indian diamond layout, houses occupy fixed locations and sign numbers change with the ascendant. In the common South Indian square layout, signs occupy fixed locations and the ascendant is marked within that arrangement. The same set of positions can be shown in either drawing.

Check the legend first. A number may identify a zodiac sign rather than a house. Assuming that every “3” means the third house is a common way to misread a chart.

Follow Gemini lagna and a Leo Moon

For a whole-sign example, let Gemini be the ascendant sign and put the Moon in Leo.

The house statement depends on the whole-sign assumption. A separately calculated bhava chart can use another house assignment; changing the illustration style alone should not create that change.

A reliable reading order

  1. Find the ascendant marker or first-house compartment.
  2. Identify whether sign names or numbers are printed.
  3. Read the planet abbreviation in its compartment.
  4. Verify the numeric longitude in the accompanying table.

If a crowded drawing is difficult on a phone, use the coordinate table before zooming into the artwork. Accessible labels and a text table are more dependable than color alone. VEDIC.world's chart views are reading aids, so compare their underlying positions rather than treating decorative placement as additional evidence.

Continue with rashi versus bhava to separate the sign grid from a house calculation.
