Three labels, three questions

The Sun and Moon are physical bodies; the ascendant, or lagna, is a calculated horizon point. A Sun sign names the zodiac sector containing the Sun. A Moon sign names the sector containing the Moon. An ascendant sign names the sector rising at the eastern horizon in the selected model.

A label without a frame is incomplete. All three need an identified zodiac convention. The ascendant additionally makes birth place and time central to the calculation. Do not substitute a noon chart's ascendant for an unknown birth time and present it as certain.

Read a synthetic chart

Suppose a chart in one stated sidereal system gives Sun 145°, Moon 45° and ascendant 75°. Divide each longitude into 30° sectors.

CoordinateAbsolute longitudeSign coordinate
Sun145°Leo 25°
Moon45°Taurus 15°
Ascendant75°Gemini 15°

These three labels can coexist. The Moon's nakshatra is a further division of its longitude; it is not another name for the ascendant.

Use uncertainty honestly

If a birth record says “about 6 am,” retain that uncertainty. A precise-looking output does not make the input precise. Historical time zones, daylight-saving rules and the distinction between local clock time and a converted instant should be checked before interpreting a small difference.

Traditional schools attach different interpretive roles to these points. Here, start by identifying which point a sentence discusses. A Moon-based reflection should not silently become a claim about every chart factor.

Follow the Moon example to Rohini, or learn why an ascendant can be drawn differently in North and South Indian charts. Your account's chart can be a useful reading aid once you have verified the birth inputs.
